Student Ukulele Program

Ukulele Program with Mono Arts Council

June Lake Arts supports youth through music and creative initiatives to foster talent and self-expression. They do this through providing ukuleles and lessons to individual children, offering art scholarships, and organizing live musical events with visiting musicians in Mono County Schools.

SUPPORTING MUSIC ONE STRING AT A TIME

In our inspiring collaborative project, June Lake Arts and Mono Arts Council are making a significant difference in the lives of our young community members. Through the power of music, we are empowering the youth in Mono County. They are not just receiving a free ukulele, but also the continued support at home to learn how to play and care for an instrument. Since 2023, we will have donated 19 ukuleles, supporting these young musicians in progressing through music tutorials at home and providing opportunities for growth with other ukulele players in our community.

In addition, we’re thrilled to welcome talented community musicians dedicated to enhancing our community’s musical landscape to work with our youth in their pursuit of music. These skilled individuals are here to share their expertise and provide valuable mentorship to students and aspiring musicians.

Participants will be able to improve their skills and learn from local experts through Zoom workshops, masterclasses, and one-on-one sessions.

Join us in celebrating the power of music and the incredible opportunities it brings for growth and connection within our community!

If you would like to learn more about how you can participate (insert application link) or donate (insert donation link) to bring music to life for our kids in Mono County, please get in touch with us.

Application

We are excited to invite you to apply to own a ukulele and receive support in learning to care for and play it. All we ask is that you fill out the application and share with us why you would like to have your own instrument.

We review ongoing applications, and you are welcome to apply from August 1st through December 1st or from January 10th to July 1st.

Once we receive and approve the student’s application, we will coordinate with their school’s principals to hand-deliver these instruments to the students there.

June Lake Arts and Mono Art Council’s Goals of this program are to:

    1. Offer the opportunity to own and pay an instrument to as many students in Mono County, focusing on the outer rims of our county.
    1. Practice and proficiency check-ins are conducted monthly through Zoom (if these times are problematic, let us know, and we will accommodate).
    1. Have recipients return year after year to play music, and better yet, if they get others in their households to play, too!
